In ancient times, having fat and weight was a sign of wealth. If you are fat, you can afford food. Being skinny was a sign of poor and lower class. As time progressed suddenly, what society is considering attractive becomes thinner and thinner to the point of people becoming walking bones. And i'm focusing more on girls.
I've seen thinspo on the internet, and it may be attractive to be that thin. To have long legs, thin arms, and a flat belly. But there's nothing beautiful about a person who starve themselves and is legit "DYING" to be thin. And society sets this as a model. Thin is attractive. Again, to each is their own opinion. Thin maybe attractive. But anorexia and bulimia isn't.
On the flip side to that, there's nothing beautiful about a person has diabetes, high blood pressure. ETC. People praise curves and talk about how beautiful overweight people can be. Yes curves are femine and beautiful. But if you are overweight or obese, you are at a great risk for heart disease, pulmonary disease etc. Life expectancy for an obese person is a lot lower.
And i say this because i've seen perfectly healthy girls starve themselves, to become this skeleton figure. And I've seen obese girls, walking around saying that they are not fat, they have curves. There's probably no easy way to call someone fat. And if you do they suddenly starve themselves. And there this whole issue about self esteem and confidence and i understand that. I know people all struggle with weight trying become some type of ideal, but they forget that being healthy is more important then being what people consider attractive.
There's extremes to both sides of the conversation. Skinny girls have been considered attractive as of lately. But because we are going through a retro and hipster stage is coming back, people are embracing curves. And some** overweight or obese girls would call themselves curvy to receive that assurance, that society is finally accepting them.
Society forgets to draw the distinction between being healthy and beautiful. Bones isn't healthy, and obesity isn't either. Everyone has different body shapes, it's how you were born, the genetics that was made to become you. Some people are curvy and some are naturally thin. You are what you are, and don't try to change it, because then you are changing you.
I originally wanted to post this to my tumblr after seeing a picture of an over weight girl. The caption said. Curves are beautiful and the model was gorgeous. But she was infact overweight to some extent and it's not healthy. Then i've also seen pictures of freakishly skinny girls, and the caption says, i wished i looked like that. And i'm just wondering. Why do they want to look like a skeleton. My cousin tells her daughter that if she wants to be pretty she needs to be thin. Why would you teach your 8 year old daughter that? Extremes of both isn't good.
